FCC Nations Cup 2009

Team Canada pulled away from a chasing pack to win the FCC Nations Cup at Angkor Golf Resort earlier this month.  

Teams representing Australia, UK and Ireland, France, Thailand and host nation Cambodia competed manfully in wet conditions to win the FCC Nations Cup.After the first round it was clear to see which nation was geared up for the event, with Canada setting out their intentions early on with Jonathan Naylor and Andy Vasily both scoring well after 18 holes.

Cambodia with local favorite Captain; Ly Hong had the round of the day shooting a gross 70 and being ably assisted by big hitting Chris Boshoff who scored 32 stableford points.  Although internal arguing over the captaincy of the UK and Ireland team was still going on into early hours of Sunday morning, they too had a chance of catching the early pace setters or Team Canada.

 

With a glimmer of sunshine and a Captain selected for UK and Ireland in Brendan O Driscoll golf commenced at 8am. Amidst heavy heads and intermittent rain, teams battled it out on the fairways of Angkor Golf Resort to lay claim to the FCC Nations Cup.

Team Cambodia made a big push for glory with Ly Hong and Boshoff again scoring well on the final day. A correct selection of Captain saw Brendan O driscoll score a massive 42 points to put UK and Ireland into contention. However, another strong showing by Canada saw them win by twelve shots from Team’s UK and Ireland and Cambodia.

An exciting weekend of golf was enjoyed by all and organizers FCC are determined to play host to the event again early next year.

Orgill clinches Angkor Open.

An enthralling final day’s golf saw Hong Kong golfer Tim Orgill win the Inaugural Angkor Amateur Open.

40 participants from 11 different countries battled it out over the lush fairways of Angkor Golf Resort. There were four handicap divisions which allowed all calibre of golfer to win the coveted division title. After the first day Nick Toon of Alpine Golf Club in Bangkok lead the field by one, shooting an even par 72 to Orgill’s 73.

Local Cambodian golfer Ly Hong was a further 4 shots back. However under the blistering sun of the final day, Orgill reached the turn in one over par to Toon’s 6 over par. However, with dropped shots on hole 13 and a double bogey on 16, Toons chances faded as Orgill held his nerve to win by 5 shots.

Notable winners of Division A Nett score were Nick Toon, Runner Up Robin Briars. Division B His Excellency Suang Heng, with Runner Up and Angkor Golf Resort regular Georges Ramorasata. Division C saw the colourful Emmett Mc Henry claim the title with Lao golfer Tong Homsambath in second place.
Ladies Division winner Nattaya Oracha from Bangkok won her division from countback from Lesley Saunderson.

The shot of the tournament came from Dillard Cheek who aced hole 17 to win the Sponsored prize from Tiger Beer. A big thank you to all those who participated and the sponsors for making Open a truly memorable event.

ANZ Royal Bank Texas scramble March 22nd, 2009

Sunday 22nd March saw the return of the ANZ Royal Bank Texas Scramble sponsored by ANZ Royal Bank. A total of 48 golfers from as far afield as Thailand and Vietnam competed in this annual Texas Scramble event. Designed to incorporate team spirit and ensure a relaxed game of golf was enjoyed by all.

Teams of 4 were selected by the ANZ Tournament Committee who outlined the rules of the day and its format. In true Aussie fashion a variety of cold drinks were appropriately on hand to quench everybody’s thirst. The traditional Angkor Golf Resort firecracker heralded the start of the event with competitors distributed on different holes of the golf course.

As the weather heated up so too did the golf and it was clear to see the elite team of Siem Reap locals comprising of Ly Hong, Bun Hai,Phillippe Gagneraud and Bara On Seng were the early pace setters with a blistering 5 under par at the turn, 4 shots of the second placed team. They maintained this lead totaling a score of 9 under par and becoming the 2009 Champions by 5 clear shots. As the participants settled down to for the buffet lunch all that remained was for ANZ Royal Bank CEO, Stephen Higgins to thank all for attending and Angkor Golf Resort for another successful event.

Angkor Golf Resort Hosts FCC Indochine Cup

A select group of golfers representing Cambodia and a visiting team from Vietnam battled it out for the prestigious Indochine Cup here at Angkor Golf Resort (19th – 21st Sept).
Based loosely on the Ryder Cup format the teams attracted 12 golfers each to play over 3 days with the format of each day changing from Fourball, Foursomes to the final day being singles.

 An experienced team from Vietnam captained by Stan (Saigon Stan) Kinnear ran out easy winners over the three days with a resounding 10.5 points to Cambodia’s 5.5 points. The game was played in great sportsmanship with the emphasis on friendship and socializing.

Sponsors Tiger beer and Coca Cola were on hand to ensure the golfer did not go thirsty and special thanks must go to them for their support in golf.

The course was in splendid condition with Jim Gubricky and his team ensuring the greens were running true and with a stimpmeter of 9.5. The sudden deluge of rain on the first day did not dampen the mood of the golfers and play continued with the golf course having drained any residual water.

Event organisers IGE are keen to develop this further with a possible rematch set to include other Asian countries wishing to join.
