Koreans dominate podium at FCC Nations Cup golf tourney

Teams from South Korea took the lion's share of the honours in the third edition of the FCC Nations Cup golf tournament at the Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap over the weekend.

Led by star performer Mun Dueokyeon, the Blue Korean team clinched the trophy with a combined score of 230, three points ahead of compatriots Korean White. The combined Belgium and USA team finished third with a score of 200 points in the two day event.

The Addicts Golfing Society of South India

The Addicts Golfing Society of South India recently visited Angkor Golf Resort for their annual 'International' trip.

A total of 58 Addicts journeyed from various parts of India to pay homage to the Angkor Wat temples and compete on the greens of Angkor. The golf event used the stableford scoring system; with eventual winner Mr. Rakesh Chadda coming out on top with 42 points.

Addicts organizer; Cdr LM Krishnan hailed Angkor Golf Resort as one of the best courses they have visited on their annual pilgrimage to exotic golf destinations. Particular praise was given to the immaculate condition of the course which allowed for such an enjoyable round of golf.

'Addicts' organizer; Mr. Krishnan conveyed this enthusiasm by confirming a number of Addicts to play in the Annual Angkor Amateur Open in August. He resolutely said "we will return".

Bird Survey in Angkor Golf Resort

Hoopoe (Upupa epops)

A recent bird survey conducted by Sam Veasna center for Wildlife Conservation, reported that there are currently 70 different bird species nesting and feeding within Angkor Golf Resort.

Good environmental practices have encouraged local wildlife to inhabit Angkor Golf Resort which is seen as haven for local and migratory bird's and other mammals.

In October last year, Golf Legend Sir Nick Faldo took time out of his busy schedule to release soft shelled turtles, an endangered species into the lakes of Angkor Golf Resort.

The green oasis of Angkor Golf Resort attracts 'winter visitors' such as the Hoopoe and White wagtail, amongst other species.

Indigenous sugar palm's, uncultivated grasses and wetlands all provide wildlife corridors, whilst enhancing the beauty of this international golf course.

Finishing Post’s Texas Scramble

The inaugural Finishing Post’s Texas Scramble social golf tournament teed off on Sunday morning, 11^th December 2010 at the Angkor Golf Resort and some solid performances were notched up, particularly considering that all players had put in heavy duty the previous night at the Finishing Post Networking party at the Sokha Angkor Resort.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Peter Brongers, who won a one year subscription to The Post and a complimentary stay in the Heritage Suites hotel.

Brendan O’ Driscoll won a two night stay at the Sokha Angkor Resort, and also free entry to the FCC Nations Cup to be held in February 2011.

Georges Ramorasata won a two night stay at the Sokha Hotel, Sihanoukville, and Etienne Lefort won a two night stay at the Independence Hotel, Sihanoukville.

Scott McNeil won dinner for two at Meric Restaurant in the Hotel de la Paix.

The winning team of the day comprised Brendan O’Driscoll, Luc Grobet, Alan Parkhouse and HS Manjunath. Each player won a dinner at Le Bistro at the Victoria Hotel.

Sir Nick Faldo return to Angkor Golf Resort to raise green conservation awareness; planted trees and released turtles in the award winning golf course.

Saturday 23rd October saw former World number one golfer; Sir Nick Faldo visit in what was specifically a site visit to Angkor Golf Resort. Faldo's, last visit was in December 2007 when he officially opened Angkor Golf Resort. 

Sir Nick took the opportunity to raise some green issues by releasing endangered freshwater turtles into the lakes of Angkor Golf Resort and planting trees next to the green number 5. He was also delighted to see the high standard of maintenance and service being achieved at a course that has been in operation for under 3 years. Sir Nick departed for Phnom Penh on Sunday.

FCC Nations Goes to the Wire

The green of Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap were alive over the weekend with exclamations of “aww my gawd” and “strewth” as the FCC Nations Cup came to a blistering and exciting finish. The tension was almost unbearable as two playoff holes were required to decide the eventual winners.

The Singapore/ Myanmar wins the FCC Nations Cup, presented by FCC Chief Operating Officer/ Raphael Guilien to Tin Kyaw Latt, Schubert Neo, and Chuan Campbell

The Singapore – Myanmar team and Team Canada both ended the two rounds level on a combined score of 212. A playoff hole ensued, but the hot competition between the two teams resulted in a draw again with a combined score of eleven each. In the second playoff, Singapore – Myanmar emerged victorious with a total of 9 strokes against Canada’s 11. 
 

Many strong individual performances were witnessed during the tournament. Australia Defence Attache Colonel Lewis Coyle won best individual stableford score over the two rounds, amassing 42 stableford points. Second was Korean golfer Kim Yongtae and Cambodia’s Meng Hieng came third. Indeed, local players put in good displays all around as Team Cambodia came third in the event with a score of 210.

Victoria Angkor Golf Resort Pro Am

The rains that had threatened all week were not enough to dampen the spirits of 52 Australian golfers who played over the well manicured greens of Angkor Golf Resort in the second Victoria Angkor Resort
Pro Am last week.

A field of 15 professional golfers and 37 amateur golfers competed in the four round stroke play for professionals and stableford scoring system for amateurs. 
 

Former World top 10 and 1987 British Open runner up legend Rodger Davis set the standard with scores of 68, 69 72, 69 to finish with a ten under total of 278. Final round birdies at holes 5 and 6 and
11 and 13 allowed Davis to win from second placed Steve Morshuis who finished with a one over 73. 

Players and Non players of the visiting group then enjoyed the true Khmer hospitality laid on by Victoria Angkor Resort with a sumptuous buffet dinner to finish another successful Pro Am event in Siem Reap

Tournament Information:

• Please arrive at the golf courses at minimum of 30 minutes before the tee time for registration.
• To be eligible to win the Tin Cup you must play all four rounds
• If you are not available to play all four rounds, you may play the ones of your choice.
• There will be prize ceremony after each round in the Club house for the days winners and a final prize ceremony after the final round to announce the Tin Cup champion..
• Flights of four (maximum) will be chosen by competition organiser and golf club management.
• Prizes are available for 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, Longest drive & Nearest the pin.
• Maximum of 4 golfers per flight.
• Scoring format: Team of 4 Medal play (best team NET score)
• Rental clubs & shoes are available but limited so first come first served!

Angkor Amateur Open 2010

Thailand based golfer; Scott Puzey won the 2010 Angkor Amateur Open at Siem Reap's; Angkor Golf Resort. Puzey shot a level par 72 on the immaculate Faldo designed course on the final day with an aggregate score of 149 to pip overnight leader Robin Briars by two shots.

Division B was a keenly contested battle with eventual winner HE Seng Chhay Our coming out on top.

Division C was more clear cut with HE Bin Chhin winning by 4 shots from nearest rival; Chea Sopheak.

Last years ladies runner up Lesley Saunderson avenged her narrow defeat by winning the 2010 division comfortably by 11 shots and also scooping the Nearest the Pin award

A hearty thanks must be given to Tiger Beer and Vittel water for providing the weekend's refreshments and Angkor Palace Resort for a wonderful Saturday nights entertainment.
